Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT)
The AMT RPT credential emphasizes ongoing professional development and is the third leg of the U.S. phlebotomy certification triad alongside the ASCP PBT and NHA CPT. Eligibility routes include graduation from an AMT-approved school, completion of military phlebotomy training (USAF BMTCP, Army 68W bridge, Navy HM with documented phlebotomy hours), or work experience with a supervisor attestation. The 200-question computer-based exam is offered at Pearson VUE and PSI centers and covers phlebotomy fundamentals, specimen processing, safety, anatomy, and quality assurance. AMT society membership includes free CE, an annual journal subscription, and access to legal consultation benefits for the certificant.
Who is this credential for?
Phlebotomists who want a credential with strong CE recognition across hospital, military, and reference-laboratory employers, including cross-border practice via AMT reciprocity agreements with select international registries.
Renewal requirements
30 CCP (Continuing Competency Program) points per 3-year cycle, OR retake the RPT exam; CCP points may be earned through AMT-endorsed continuing education, journal quizzes, presentations, and committee work.
