Qualification in Apheresis (QIA)

The ASCP Qualification in Apheresis (QIA) is an advanced credential that sits one tier above the PBT and assumes substantial clinical experience with cell-separator technology. The exam covers apheresis physiology, donor and patient assessment, machine operation across multiple platforms (Spectra Optia, Terumo BCT, Haemonetics), complications management, quality assurance, and regulatory standards specific to therapeutic apheresis. Eligibility requires an active PBT, MLS, RN, or equivalent credential plus documented apheresis experience under a qualified supervisor. The QIA is rare in phlebotomy-only technicians but common among hospital blood-bank staff who perform donor and therapeutic apheresis.
