Qualification in Donor Phlebotomy (QDP)
The AABB Qualification in Donor Phlebotomy (QDP) is the industry-standard credential for staff collecting at blood-donor and plasma centers that operate under FDA 21 CFR 630. The credential is grounded in AABB Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services (33rd edition) and covers donor screening, donor deferral criteria, donor reactions including syncope and citrate toxicity, apheresis procedures, venipuncture for 500 mL whole-blood draws, and quality assurance. The exam is computer-based with 100 multiple-choice items, plus a separately documented live collection observation. Many blood centers reimburse the exam fee as part of staff onboarding.
Who is this credential for?
Phlebotomists who work at blood donor centers (American Red Cross, Vitalant, OneBlood, New York Blood Center) and plasma collection facilities (Grifols, BioLife, CSL Plasma, Octapharma); required for staff performing 500 mL whole-blood draws and apheresis setup.
Renewal requirements
Annual competency assessment by employer plus biennial continuing-education documentation; AABB publishes a competency verification form that the qualified supervisor signs each year.
