Phlebotomy Technician (PBT)
The ASCP PBT is the long-standing gold-standard U.S. phlebotomy certification and is the credential most often cited in hospital hiring language. The computer-adaptive exam covers six domains: anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, specimen collection (venipuncture and capillary), specimen handling and processing, laboratory operations, safety and compliance, and point-of-care testing. Eligibility routes include graduation from a NAACLS-approved phlebotomy program within the last five years, one year of full-time phlebotomy experience under a qualified supervisor within the last five years, or completion of an acceptable military training program. The exam is offered year-round at Pearson VUE centers and through DANTES on military bases. First-time pass rates hover around 82% for NAACLS graduates and 67% for work-experience-only candidates.
